There are many mediums of communication and technology out there. One such medium is language, and further more, digital language. This language can take place through blogging, texting, e-mailing, Facebook, Twitter, online classes, and any other online interaction with technology that involves some sort of writing. As with anything, there are implications to this new form of language, and as with any implication there are good ones and bad ones. Now, more than ever, people are writing. People write everyday when they answer a text, respond to a Facebook notification, or reply to an e-mail. This new language is encouraging people to think and voice their opinion through various online social sites. It can encourage people to become more involved and is an easier way of passing around information.
There are, however, bad implications too. Is this new form of language taking away our formal language? Are people forgetting what proper grammar and spelling is? Should this be allowed? The idea is that hopefully people are aware of their audience and can adapt their language usage depending on the situation. There are people who are not able to do that though. The technology should not necessarily be blamed though. The technology did not make the person spell the word that way. It could be lack of an beneficial education and not actually knowing how to spell the word, or it could simply be that the person is aware of the mistake and the informal language and just does not care if the word is spelled correctly, or there isn't a comma in the right place. The new technology is getting blamed for the this "bad" new medium of communication, when in fact, none of it is the technologies fault and is rather the choice of the user to use the technology like that.

I dig the overall feel of your blog. It looks really Matrix-y. The black background was a great choice.
ReplyDeleteI really like your theme with your text and pictures. I also like your point that people are writing more than they every were--I completely agree, especially with our new age technological messaging and blog sites.
ReplyDeleteYou talked a lot about the difference of language due to new technologies and that technology may not be the problem but the way that we are taught. It kind of lost focus for me on how language is the medium but still very interesting blog.
ReplyDeleteYour idea is so amazing. Language is definitely the fundamental element of medium. Even Facebook and Twitter are based on HTML, which is a form of digital language written by English letters also. I think people who use language as a medium should concern how important it is. No matter how new the media tool is, the main content usually consists of language that conveying information. Language is the medium of the medium.
